Arizona Democrats have managed to dramatically shift the makeup of the State Legislature from only 20 Democrats out of 60 members in 2010 to 29 in 2022. Led by Dr. Eric Meyer and Katie Hobbs, the Arizona Democratic Party (ADP) created the Arizona Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (ADLCC) in 2012. ADLCC targets those Legislative Districts where the Democrats have a probability of taking away another Republican house seat.
ADLCC = Flip the Legislature
This year, ADLCC is targeting 8 of the 30 Legislative Districts. We need one flip to tie the House and two to win. What does this mean for those of us who are in red districts like LD3 or blue Districts?
Red Districts, for the most part, hold their own. Democrats who are surrounded by Republicans are more aware of how critical their votes are – and they vote.
Blue Districts are a different issue. Legislators get elected at the Primary. Republicans running for office typically don’t have a statistical chance in the General Election so the Democrat who wins the Primary goes on to win the General.
In 2016, Democrats won Maricopa County offices for Sherriff Penzone, Recorder Fontes and School Superintendent Hoffman. Turnout and votes were influenced by anti-Arpaio sentiment in out blue districts. Without them, we do not win these county elections.
